In 2014 I featured a series of blog posts introducing you to 2,014 names. For the most part they were names that were brand new to me as well. Some names may be more familiar but I found the meaning or origin or some other aspect of the name made it worthy of inclusion here. You may love some of the names, you may hate some, but hopefully you enjoy learning about all of them.

Winding Down the Week With a Few Good Names

GIRLS

Saada

Teodora

Velda - This appears as a surname in Devonshire, England, first found in 1370, for the Bailiff of Kingsbridge, John Velda. The surname is related also to Veale, Vele, Veel, and Vela. Probably derived from the Saxon "feld".  See W. Davies "Some Notes on the Ancient Records Preserved in Kingsbridge Church", Devon Notes and Queries, 1909, Vol V, page 99, published by James G. Commin, Exeter, England.

There is also the Dutch surname Van de Velde.

Arad - Hebrew, meaning "wild ox".

Bernat - Catalan form of the Germanic name Berinhard meaning "strong as a bear".

Cheyenne - English form of the Dakota Sioux name "sahiyena" for a Native American tribe. It means "little sahiya". This is not what the Cheyenne people called themselves however.

It is also the name of a town in Wyoming.
