In 2014 I featured a series of blog posts introducing you to 2,014 names. For the most part they were names that were brand new to me as well. Some names may be more familiar but I found the meaning or origin or some other aspect of the name made it worthy of inclusion here. You may love some of the names, you may hate some, but hopefully you enjoy learning about all of them.

1909 Dayton, Ohio Directory

1909 Dayton, Ohio Directory

Names From A While Ago

GIRLS

Aletta- came across this in an old directory. Aletta Van Wie was a teacher in Dayton, Ohio.

Celina - a spelling of Selena found in a 1909 directory for Dayton, Ohio. Wife of Matthew Van Ostrand (hmm, a relative of Frank Van Ostrand?)

Isora - lady in a 1909 Dayton, Ohio directory, wife of William H. Van Riper.

I came across another woman with this name: Isora Melissa LeSeur of Sharon, Massachusetts in the book Genealogy of the Tucker Family.

It is "possible" that Isora is a variant spelling of Isaura, but the spelling does not match the pronunciation perfectly. Isaura is a Spanish name said "ee sour uh" but an English speaker would not generally say Isora this way. However, they might say Isaura like Isora (I would guess at "ih zor uh" or "ih sore uh" or even "eye zor uh" or "eye sore uh").

Linnie - name of a saleslady in a 1909 Dayton, Ohio directory. Linnie H. Van Skaik.

Phillice- an unusual spelling of Phyllis I came across in a 1909 directory for Dayton, Ohio. She was the wife of Frank Van Ostrand, painter.

BOYS

Grenville

Pretty Font

Love this font that I found in an old directory for Dayton, Ohio.

Joseph Corrodon Kingsbury

I'm not sure how Joseph Corrodon Kingsbury is related to Nancy Kingsbury (who married Caleb Baldwin). But I'm sure they are related. Her husband Caleb recorded another famous revelation in Mormon Scripture, received by Joseph Smith in Liberty Jail. Her father was Judge James Kingsbury and she was likewise from the same part of Ohio.

Names That are Food for Thought this Thursday

Perhaps you have heard of Scheherezade, the beautiful princess who tells a tale to the sultan that lasts 1,001 Nights (the story, or stories, really, are often just called the Arabian Nights). She tells the story in such a way in order to preserve her life, as this sultan has the habit of killing his wife after his first night with her. Scheherezade, though, has better luck than most due to her clever storytelling that preserves her life. Well, here is a little feast of Babylonian names, and perhaps they will help give insight into the rather long and complicated name of Scheherezade.

GIRL NAMES

A ha zu nu - Babylonian, meaning "their sister".

Aja ku zu ub ma tim - Babylonian, meaning "Aja is the splendor of the country".

Friday's Name Free-for-all

GIRLS

Lah -There were 5 girls named this in 2012 by the statistics from the U.S. Social Security Administration.

This is listed on behindthename.com as a user-submitted boy name from the Khana language meaning 'second son' (from the Ogoni tribe of Nigeria). But since it is was listed as a girl name on the SSA list, I do not think that is the right origin for its use as a feminine name, though I could be wrong.

It could come from the Anglo-Saxon for 'meadow'. Frederick Davis, in his book The Etymology of Some Derbyshire Place names, lists this as one way of writing the Anglo-saxon word (others being lea or leag, lag, leah, and leg).

I'm not satisfied with this though. For all I know the parents were naming their child after the way a person sings (la la la la la).

BOYS

Pratheek - Sanskrit, meaning "look" or "appearance". There were 5 boys named this in 2012 by the statistics from the U.S. Social Security Administration. It is also written as Pratik.

Names that are Food for Thought This Thursday

GIRLS

Ambree - Although the word "ambrée" refers to a beer that is amber colored in French, I think that it would be fine to consider that this name has similar roots. It may be a modern invention, taking the popularity of the name Amber and that of having names end or begin in the 'bree' sound and combining the two. But it is good enough for me to see it as the French word for 'amber' as far as a name etymology goes.

Anahita - Persian goddess of the heavenly streams

Pernel - French, from Petronilla meaning "pretty stone".

Shirin - there was a Persian queen named this and believed to be from either Armenia or to be Aramaic, or from Syria. She was married to the Persian king at the time that Mohammed lived.

Erkuries - Complete guesswork on my part, but this would seem to be a corruption of Hercules, which is the Roman version of the classic Greek hero Heracles. Heracles comes from the name of the goddess Hera and the name of the hero before he reached hero status, Alcaeus or Alcides. One source gives the etymology as "Glory of Hera" from Hera's name and the element "kleos" meaning "glory" or "renown". The Etruscan form of the name was Hercle which is said to come from the Greek Herakles.
